Siding planning starts with two separate questions: how much primary cladding to order, and what the complete installed replacement scope may cost. The answer also changes with the product format. Vinyl is ordered from package coverage, lap products from installed exposure, and brick veneer from masonry-unit density. Use this guide to choose the correct calculator, measure exterior walls consistently, and compare bids without hiding accessories, drainage-plane work, removal, or repairs.

How Siding Material Formulas Differ

Every method starts with measured net wall area plus an explicit allowance, but the conversion to a purchase unit must match the selected product.

Choose Quantity or Complete Replacement Cost

Use the Siding Material / Quantity Calculator when the main question is primary wall-cladding takeoff. It subtracts major openings, applies a visible allowance once, converts the target into the selected product’s purchase format, and rounds once at the whole-project level. Enter a supplier price for that package, plank, board, or brick only if you want a material budget; the calculator does not mislabel an installed-price benchmark as material-only.

Use the Siding Replacement Cost Calculator when comparing installed project budgets. It applies a source-published material-specific installed range once, then separately models selected weather barrier, removal and disposal, height access, and permit scope. Do not add the quantity-page budget to the replacement result for the same wall area; primary cladding is already included in the installed assembly.

Measure Exterior Walls, Not Indoor Floor Area

A home’s conditioned floor area is not its siding area. Measure each rectangular wall as width × height and each triangular gable as base × height ÷ 2. Add those exterior surfaces, then subtract large windows, doors, and garage-door openings using one consistent policy across measurements and contractor bids.

Keep a wall-by-wall worksheet instead of entering a house-size shortcut. A wide one-story house and a compact two-story house can have the same indoor square footage but very different wall area. Small penetrations may remain inside the allowance when the product guidance permits, while large openings should not be silently counted as cladding.

Match the Formula to the Material

A siding square is an estimating unit equal to 100 sq ft; it does not guarantee that every carton contains 100 sq ft. Vinyl quantity therefore uses the exact package coverage on the label or supplier quote. Fiber-cement, natural-wood, and engineered-wood lap siding use board length multiplied by installed exposure, not nominal board width, because the overlapped portion does not cover new wall area. Convert an exposure entered in inches to feet before multiplying it by board length in feet. Panels, shingles, and shakes require their own manufacturer-stated coverage rather than the lap-plank formula.

Brick veneer uses units per square foot for the selected brick size and mortar joint. That count is only the facing-unit takeoff. Support, mortar, ties, drained cavity, flashing, weeps, lintels, and opening details remain separate assemblies. For every material, confirm color-lot availability, minimum orders, freight, breakage assumptions, and return rules before purchase.

Separate Cladding from the Wall Assembly

Primary siding is only the visible layer. A complete scope may also require starter, corners, J-channel or receivers, trim, flashing, fasteners, sealant, mounting blocks, weather-resistive barrier, exterior insulation, soffit transitions, and manufacturer-specific accessories. These use linear-foot, each, roll, or assembly quantities that should not be guessed from a cladding square-foot number.

Removal is often valuable because it exposes sheathing, fastening, flashing, rot, insects, and drainage-plane defects. Installing over existing siding can be acceptable only when the substrate is flat, dry, sound, locally permitted, and allowed by the selected manufacturer. A lower bid that omits removal is a different scope, not automatically the same job for less money.

Repair, Paint, or Replace Siding

Localized repair may be reasonable when damage is limited, compatible replacement material is available, and the surrounding wall assembly remains dry and serviceable. Painting may address a sound paintable surface with cosmetic or coating failure, but it does not repair swelling, rot, widespread cracking, failed fastening, missing flashing, or water behind the cladding.

Replacement becomes more defensible when deterioration is widespread, matching repairs are unavailable, repeated coating or patch failures continue, or removal is needed to correct the drainage plane and opening details. Have active leaks and structural or sheathing damage evaluated before choosing a finish; neither calculator predicts hidden repair cost.

Compare Siding Quotes on the Same Scope

Ask each contractor to state measured net wall area, gable and opening treatment, exact product and profile, allowance, accessory and trim scope, weather barrier, flashing around windows and doors, removal and disposal, sheathing-repair unit prices, access equipment, finish or cut-edge work, permits, freight, tax, cleanup, warranty, and exclusions.

Material price per square foot is not a complete installed comparison. A bid can appear cheaper because it omits trim, wall preparation, drainage details, tear-off, tall-wall access, or a finish system. Use the calculators to normalize the visible scope, then replace planning allowances with measured contractor and supplier quotes before purchasing.

Which siding calculator should I use?
Use the material and quantity calculator for net wall area, allowance, whole packages, planks, boards, or brick units, and an optional supplier-priced material budget. Use the replacement-cost calculator for a planning budget based on a complete installed siding range plus selected removal scope. Do not add the two budgets for the same wall area because the replacement estimate already includes primary cladding.
Can I use my home’s floor area to calculate siding?
No. Indoor floor area and exterior wall area are different geometries. Measure wall rectangles and triangular gables, add them, and subtract major openings consistently. Homes with the same floor area can have very different siding quantities because of story count, footprint, gables, and openings.
Does one box of siding always cover one square?
No. One siding square is 100 sq ft as an estimating unit, but package coverage varies by product and supplier. Enter the coverage printed for the exact vinyl carton or ordering unit. Lap siding and brick veneer use different formulas rather than assuming a 100-sq-ft package.
Does the siding quantity include trim and accessories?

Treat them as different scopes. A removal quote should state tear-off, disposal, sheathing inspection, weather-barrier work, and repair pricing. An overlay quote should explain how the installer verified a flat, dry, sound substrate and whether local rules and the new siding manufacturer permit that assembly. Normalize those inclusions before comparing totals.
