About the Gambrel Roof Calculator
A gambrel roof features the distinctive barn-style double slope on each side β a steep lower section and a shallower upper section meeting at a break line. This design maximizes usable upper-floor space, making it popular for barns, workshops, and homes where attic livability is desired. Our calculator estimates the total cost of a gambrel roof including materials, framing, and labor based on your building dimensions and roof angles.
How We Calculate Gambrel Roof Cost
We assign 35% of each half-span run to the steep lower section and 65% to the upper section, calculate both slope lengths from the entered angles, and multiply the four panels by building length. The resulting roof area selects the same architectural-asphalt, exposed-fastener-metal, or cedar profile used by the shared roof engine, including material-specific waste and accessories. New projects add separate framing/deck materials and labor; re-roof projects remove those lines and add tear-off plus disposal. Gambrel break flashing and a 30% steep-slope/break-line labor allowance remain geometry-specific.
Factors That Affect Gambrel Roof Cost
Key factors include building width and length, the assumed 35/65 break position, both slope angles, covering waste and purchase rounding, material system, framing/deck scope, break-line detailing, tear-off/disposal, regional lumber and labor costs, and dormers or valleys. A truss designer or structural engineer must replace the planning geometry with project-specific member, connection, load, uplift, and bracing design.
Gambrel Roof Rates Used in This Calculator
Shared covering profiles apply to calculated sloped roof area before state adjustment. New construction and re-roofing then add different Gambrel-specific structural or removal lines.

| Cedar shake covering | $4/sq ft | $6.50/sq ft | $9.50/sq ft | 15% waste |
| Exposed-fastener metal covering | $4/sq ft | $7/sq ft | $11/sq ft | 12% waste |
| Gambrel break flashing | $2/lf | $4/lf | $7/lf | Both roof break lines |

Two 30 Γ 40 ft gambrel roof examples
Both examples use 60-degree lower slopes and 30-degree upper slopes. The model calculates 1,741 sq ft of sloped roof area from the 1,200-sq-ft footprint.
Example 1 β new architectural-asphalt gambrel structure. Ten percent waste and whole-square ordering produce 2,000 sq ft of purchase coverage. Covering, accessories, underlayment, break flashing, framing/deck materials and labor, roof installation, steep-slope allowance, and permit produce an $18,293β$36,059 range with a $26,159 midpoint. Materials total $12,032; field labor totals $13,527; permit is $600.
Example 2 β exposed-fastener metal on the same new structure. Twelve percent waste produces 1,950 sq ft of panel purchase coverage. The range becomes $26,854β$63,523 with a $42,429 midpoint. The difference comes from the metal covering/accessory system and its installation rate; geometry and framing quantities are unchanged.
New structure and re-roofing are different scopes
A new gambrel roof needs the framing or engineered trusses and roof deck that create the two-slope profile. A re-roof already has that structure, so the normal scope removes the old covering, disposes of debris, inspects the deck, and installs the new roof assembly. Charging both full framing and routine tear-off by default overstates either project.
For the 30 Γ 40 ft architectural-asphalt example, selecting re-roof changes the modeled midpoint from $26,159 to $14,580. It removes $6,094 of framing/deck material and $8,096 of framing labor, then adds $2,089 of tear-off and $522 of disposal. The re-roof figure assumes the deck and framing are serviceable; rot, reinforcement, multiple layers, dormers, and occupied-space protection require separate allowances.
Why footprint area is not roofing area
A 30 Γ 40 ft footprint is 1,200 sq ft, but the roof covering follows four sloped panels rather than a flat rectangle. In the default geometry, those panels total 1,741 sq ft β about 45% more than the footprint. Steeper angles increase slope length and can also increase access difficulty.
Use building width and ridge-direction length, not indoor floor area. Ask a roofer or truss designer to confirm the break-point geometry, overhangs, valleys, dormers, waste, and structural loads before ordering. This calculator fixes the lower-panel horizontal run at 35% of each half-span as a planning approximation; a custom engineered profile can produce a different area and peak height.

Cost basis & data provenance
Component proxyThis calculator checks a typical new 30 Γ 40 ft architectural-asphalt gambrel roof, 60Β°/30Β°, framing and deck included against a component-level proxy benchmark of $7,500β$14,000 broad average; $5,000β$60,000 reported range, using Fixr dedicated gambrel guide plus roof-framing and covering component checks (accessed 2026-07-23). Cost data is scheduled for review by 2027-01.
Limitation: The dedicated national headline does not disclose a reference size or whether its typical scope includes complete framing and roof deck. The 30 Γ 40 ft model therefore remains calibrated through explicit framing and covering components.
- Fixr β Gambrel Roof Guide: $7,500β$14,000 average installed cost; $5,000β$60,000 reported range. This is a dedicated gambrel headline and explicitly names framing, labor, covering type, and size as cost drivers, but it publishes no reference dimensions or complete assembly schedule. The model's larger 30 Γ 40 ft new structure falls inside the broad range but is not treated as equivalent to the undisclosed average case. Checked 2026-07-23.
- Fixr β Frame a New Roof: $5.78β$10.52 per sq ft for framing. This is a component proxy only. The canonical model maps the source's framing range into separate material and labor lines, then adds gambrel geometry, asphalt roofing, underlayment, break flashing, installation, access, and permit.
