About the Garage Door Calculator
Garage door replacement is a complete moving door system, not just a price per panel. The door sections must match the opening, track geometry, counterbalance system, hardware, perimeter seals, wind requirements, and opener. This calculator keeps those assemblies visible. It includes new matched tracks and hardware with every door because an old track should not be presumed compatible with a different door. Replacement mode also includes removal and haul-away; a prepared new opening does not.
How We Calculate Garage Door Cost
The model multiplies width Γ height Γ door count to establish total opening area, then applies the selected material profile to the factory door sections. Single-layer steel, insulated steel, composite overlay, and real wood each have separate section, hardware, glazing, wind-upgrade, and installation rates. Whole-door lines add one matched track/counterbalance/hardware set and one installation scope per opening. Windows and wind rating are per-door upgrades. Opener replacement adds equipment plus installation; opener reuse adds reconnection and safety-limit setup. Removal, disposal, minor opening repair, and permit allowances remain separate so a quote can be compared scope by scope.
Factors That Affect Garage Door Cost
Price changes with the number and dimensions of openings, factory material and finish, insulation construction, glazing, track lift and radius, headroom and backroom, door weight, spring design, wind design pressure, perimeter sealing, opener capacity, controls, attachment backing, removal access, electrical readiness, local labor, permits, and concealed jamb, header, masonry, or water damage. A single 16-ft door is not equivalent to two 8-ft doors: the latter requires two assemblies and two complete hardware systems. Measure the opening and operating space before ordering
Record the finished opening width and height at several points, then check headroom above the opening, sideroom beside it, and backroom along the ceiling. Note ceiling obstructions, beams, ducts, lights, shelving, vehicle lifts, and the existing track type. Photograph the spring, track radius, top fixtures, opener rail, attachment backing, jambs, header face, floor slope, and exterior trim. The entered width and height drive cost, but they are not a complete order specification.
If the opening is out of square, the header or jamb backing is damaged, or masonry must move, obtain a framing or structural scope before ordering the door. Wind rating and opener compatibility are assembly decisions
A wind-rated door is a tested system tied to a model, size, hardware schedule, reinforcement, attachment pattern, and design pressure. A generic brace or heavier panel does not establish compliance. Coastal exposure, building location, opening size, local wind speed, enclosure classification, and code adoption can change the required pressure. Use the local permit authority and supplier documentation; the calculator's selection is an allowance, not engineering.
The opener does not counterbalance the door. Springs must leave the door properly balanced before an opener is connected. Reuse also depends on door size and weight, rail geometry, controls, entrapment protection, condition, and manufacturer compatibility.
